Diabetes drugs 'pose heart risk'

Two drugs commonly prescribed to treat type 2 diabetes double the risk of heart failure, a study of data on more than 78,000 patients suggests. More than 1.5 million prescriptions for rosiglitazone and pioglitazone were issued in England alone last year. The researchers, led by the University of East Anglia, suggest fluid retention caused by the drugs may be to blame. Writing in the journal Diabetes Care, they call for a rethink on the drugs by the regulatory authorities.

Caught Out? Shepway Tories Claim Recycling Covers Folkestone Flats: Shepway Council Denies It

A report in the Folkestone Herald has highlighted that recycling is to be withdrawn from Irene Astor Court off Dover Road in Folkestone, with a Council spokesman claiming "Flats are not currently included in our recycling collections". This comes under 6 weeks since Councillor Rory Love, the Tory Cabinet member with responsibility for recycling assured Councillors that recycling does cover flats within town.

"Guildhall" Win First Shepway Lib Dem 5-a-Side Tournament

5 teams battled it out at Pent Valley Leisure Centre to become the first Shepway Lib Dems 5-a-Side football champions. "Guildhall" went away with the trophy, with team leader Alex McNeice promising to look after it carefully until next year!

Lib Dems unveil anti-poverty plan

The Liberal Democrats have unveiled plans which they say would lift five million people out of "relative poverty" and end "dependency culture". The party plans to introduce incentives for working, saving and studying. It also wants to remove higher earners from the Tax Credits system and cut the number claiming means-tested benefits by 10 million by 2020. The party promised to tackle "causes", rather than "symptoms", of the UK's "massive inequalities".
