Farron calls for fair deal for hill farmers

Local MP, Tim Farron, highlighted the need on Wednesday for hill farmers to be given a fair deal by the Government. The Hill Farm Allowance, which rewards hill farmers for their stewardship of the land, is due to be replaced by a new reward structure in 2007. DEFRA is currently carrying out a consultation process on the new system.

20 years ago, during the cold war, few would have believed that Europe could heal divisions which had separated its people since the Second World War. The fall of the Berlin wall kick-started a process of rapprochement and reconciliation which led to ten new Members joining the EU two years ago - many from the old Communist bloc.

"Government waiting targets nonsense" says Lib Dem MP

Commenting on the details of the maximum 18 week waiting list target announced by the Department of Health, Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary, Steve Webb MP said: "Despite the Government's assurances, too many people are still waiting far too long for NHS treatment. It is outrageous for the Government to boast about hitting its 18 week target when their definition excludes some of the treatments with the longest waits. "It is nonsense for the Government to claim they are abolishing waiting in the NHS. For some services, ranging from fertility treatment to hearing aids, some people are currently waiting years."
