Liberal Democrats reiterate commitment to international development
Liberal Democrat Parliamentary candidate Robin Lawrence said "The food and oil price crises of last year forced 150 million people in the developing world back into extreme poverty and the current global downturn will trap another 90 million people in poverty. At the 2005 Gleneagles summit the G8 agreed to increase aid levels by $50bn per year by 2010, these pledges have not been honoured in years of sustained global economic growth. We should still, in a time of economic downturn, take action to fulfil these outstanding pledges is now essential to prevent a dramatic reversal of progress towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)."
