Epilepsy care 'scandal' reported

Almost half of the 990 epilepsy-linked deaths in England each year are avoidable, says a parliamentary report. Nearly 70,000 patients do not get drugs they need, while even more are given medication unnecessarily, the All Party Parliamentary Group on Epilepsy said. It described the figures as a "national scandal", arguing that misdiagnosis of patients was costing £134m annually. The Department of Health said it took epilepsy "very seriously" and would study the report carefully.

Zahid Shah slams Wolverhampton Homes for neglect

A resident of a block of flats in Glentworth Gardens has called on Zahid Shah for help saying that Wolverhampton Homes are failing to maintain the property properly. Zahid was shocked by what he saw. There was broken glass surrounding the main entrance and rotting rubbish at back. When the resident said she often saw rats attracted by the rubbish Zahid soon found places for them to hide including an uncovered drain in the wast bin store. He then spotted a section of a flat roof was rotten and collapsing and that the outside clothes drying was overgrown with weeds and unusable.

MP reveals 91% rise in Council Tax in 10 years - and calls for abolition

Local MP, Tim Farron has revealed figures obtained by the Halifax Bank that show that the level of Council Tax for an average sized property across the country has almost doubled in the ten years since Labour came to power in 1997. The burden on homeowners has therefore increased massively, and the rise is more than three times the level of inflation.

Farron asks Minister to protect older people from abuse

Local MP, Tim Farron used Health Questions in parliament today to ask the Health Minister Ivan Lewis the Department of Health's opinion on the regulations designed to prevent elder abuse. Mr Farron asked the Minister if in light of a Help the Aged report which claims up to half a million pensioners are being abused, the Department consider the guidelines to be stringent enough to prevent such abuse.

Chinese Lib Dems Event: London Day

The Chinese Lib Dems today organised a visit to Westminster with reception hosted by Simon Hughes MP in honour of Anna Lo (Alliance Party) of the Northern Ireland Assembly. Following this there was a tour of City Hall courtesy of Mike Tuffrey, leader of the Liberal Democrat Group on the GLA, and an afternoon visit to Camden Chinese Community Centre and Chinese National Healthy Living Centre.
