Older people being denied Human Rights in healthcare say Liberal Democrats

According to parliament's joint committee on human rights, one in five care homes are failing to meet minimum standards of dignity for older people. The committee warned of "disturbing evidence" of maltreatment, neglect, abuse and unfair eviction of care home residents. Calling for a complete "culture change", the committee accused the Department of Health and the Ministry of Justice for failing to give adequate leadership to care providers. In a report published today, it was also warned that current laws were failing to protect older people, with many patients and NHS staff unaware of their human rights.

The local Liberal Democrats have selected a strong candidate to defeat Conservative plans to desecrate the local environment around Broomfield, Great Waltham and Little Waltham. Malcolm Taylor will fight the local by-election on 11 September, and is well-placed to defeat the Conservatives as the Lib Dems came second here in May's election.

Breaking News: Foot and Mouth Temporary Control Zone put in place on Romney Marsh

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) have this morning announced a 3km radius Temporary Control Zone has been put on Romney Marsh, following a suspected case of Foot and Mouth disease (FMD) on a farm in the Romney Marsh area. Kent Trading Standards Officers are working with DEFRA, and a vet has taken samples for formal analysis: results are not expected until later today at the earliest.
