Councillor Peter Rush - fighting adainst Jim Dobbin's idea of a 'Banana Republic'

Dobbin's plea - sign of Labour desperation!

Heywood North Councillor Peter Rush has slammed Jim Dobbin MP for trying to interfere in the local elections. In his letter from Parliament this week, Mr Dobbin, MP for Heywood and Middleton says - "The position of Mayor means that the incumbent has an extremely busy programme for 12 months full of engagements. The convention in Parliament is that the Speaker is unopposed for re-selection and I feel strongly that this should apply to the Mayor in local election years. This would have to be an agreement across the political parties but it is worth consideration."

Senior Lib Dem Transport MP slams Blair's 'Spam Email!'

Rochdale MP and Lib Dem Transport Spokesperson - Paul Rowen has accused the Prime Minister of being 'out of touch and misleading' in his reply to well over a 1.7 Million people, who a signed a petition on his Website against Road Pricing. Paul said, "The huge response from all walks of life has taken the Government by surprise. The petition was hugely popular in Greater Manchester where the debate has been handled particularly badly by Labour transport bosses. The rushed way that the idea was announced has led to a completely avoidable campaign that I am afraid has not helped ease congestion on our roads nor improved public transport."

Letter from Councillor Dale Mulgrew.

I write in relation to the increasingly noisier rantings in this paper by Councillor Ian Duckworth. Every so often Councillor Duckworth 'loses it' - He doesn't check the facts and prefers to try and speak on behalf of this Town - when he has little knowledge of what's actually going on. His letter in a recent edition of the Rochdale Observer says it all - he accuses the Liberal Democrats of changing tack about Congestion Charging. Completely untrue - Paul Rowen MP, Councillor Alan Taylor and our GMPTE Rep - Councillor Peter Davison and the Lib Dem Group have been consistent on this issue. We cannot consider Congestion Charging until we see a dramatic improvement in the Public Transport Infrastructure. It was also at Councillor Alan Taylor's request that the 4 key tests were built into the recommendations from all Council Leaders in Greater Manchester.

Due to Boundary Changes - Heywood and Middleton is now much more winnable for the Liberal Democrats and I have every confidence that the voters of Heywood and Middleton will back our positive campaign. In the local elections in May, we polled more votes that Labour in the Heywood Constituency. It is now my job to convert this into Parliamentary votes and I am excited at the prospect - This seat is there for the taking, the Liberal Democrats are determined to win it."
