Hospital Building Sell-off Confirmed

A statement to Shepway District Council last night by East Kent NHS Facilities Director Howard Jones confirmed that the NHS Trust are continuing with their plan to sell the main building of the Royal Victoria Hospital, probably for residential development.

Campbell challenges Prime Minister over BAE Scandal

At yesterday's PMQs Liberal Democrat Leader Sir Ming Campbell quizzed Tony Blair over the BAE affair, asking him which minister was answerable for the decision to withhold information about payments made by the Ministry of Defence to Prince Bandar. Following the Prime Minister's response in which he took responsibility for this decision, Sir Ming Campbell asked the PM to tell the House: "what payments have been made since 2002? What he knew about these payments and when he knew? And what legal advice he took after these payments after the law changed here in 2002? And finally whatever happened to Robin Cook's foreign policy with an ethical dimension?"

Affordable homes promise welcomed by Dundee LibDems

Dundee LibDems today (Thursday 14th June) welcomed news that the Leader of the Liberal Democrats Sir Menzies Campbell MP has unveiled proposals for building one million new socially rented, affordable and low cost homes by 2020.

Lib Dems plan homes 'revolution'

The Liberal Democrats want to "ensure the face of council housing is changed forever" by building a million social homes over the next 10 years. Sir Menzies Campbell said it was a "national disgrace" that cities are "too often known for 'sink estates'". In his "revolution", Sir Menzies would introduce a building programme of 100,000 social, low-cost affordable homes per year. Social housing has become ghettoised - assigned only to the poorest and most vulnerable - with just one third of working age tenants in full-time jobs. We need to break the pattern of the past 10 years with a revolution in housing policy.

Lib Dem MP wins prestigious Animal Welfare award

South East Region MP Mike Hancock, MP has won an award from the Animal Welfare Rights organisation - PETA Europe (People for the Ethical Treatment) as their "Most Progressive Politician". Each year PETA presents their Proggy Awards to, as they put it to "individuals and companies who are leaders in their fields when it comes to animal-friendly innovations." 2006 winners included companies such as Body Shop, Top Shop, Holland and Barrett and Nintendo for their "Nintendogs" game as the best animal-friendly video game.
