Local MP Tim Farron has spoken today in a Westminster Hall debate on the future of local government in Cumbria. Mr Farron has been campaigning against Cumbria County Council's bid submitted to the government which would see seven local authorities merged into one, with the administrative centre in Carlisle.
Paul Holmes, Liberal Democrat MP for Chesterfield is encouraging his constituents to join him in making a promise to the environment to mark World Environment Day 2007.
Developers have put forward a scheme which includes 160 flats and 90 houses to be built at the velodrome site on Saffron Lane.

Gordon Brown has announced his plans to extend the existing anti-terror laws when he takes over as Prime Minister. He wants to give the police more powers - including holding suspects without charge for more than 28 days and allowing the police to continue questioning suspects after they have been charged. Civil liberties campaigners have condemned the plans. Mr Brown has also stated that he is also planning to summon cross-party talks in the Privy Council on the use of phone-tap evidence in court.
