Hospital news disastrous for Heywood!

Heywood Councillor Peter Rush has vowed to fight to save maternity and childcare services at Fairfield Hospital. Maternity and Child Care Services were axed, along with Rochdale Infirmary which leaves no services in Bury or Rochdale.

Height loss link to heart disease

It's common knowledge that as we get older we get shorter. But UK researchers have now found that men who lose 3cm or more of height as they age have an increased risk of heart attack and death. The study of 4,200 men published in Archives of Internal Medicine took into account other risk factors for heart disease and poor health.

Dismay over MS treatment decision

Multiple sclerosis charities have said they are "bitterly disappointed" at a decision not to prescribe an anti-MS drug in Scotland. Both the MS Society and the MS Trust believe the drug Tysabri could help slow the progression of disability in hundreds of sufferers. But the Scottish Medicines Consortium said the economic case for the drug had not been demonstrated. The charities urged sufferers to fight for Tysabri on an individual basis.

At the Second Reading of the Offender Management Bill, Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary, Nick Clegg MP accused the Government of failing to tackle the real causes behind the shocking rates of reoffending. Nick Clegg MP said "Tackling reoffending rates is vital but this Bill is not the way to do it."
