Liberal Democrats Condemn Tory Staff Cuts

Months of debate came to a head today when Surrey County Council voted on the Business Delivery Review (BDR) - with the Liberal Democrat group rejecting the proposals sanctioned by the Tory-run Executive to cut staff numbers. Staff members and representatives of their trade unions listened in the public gallery and the adjoining Ashcombe Suite as Liberal Democrats fought against the proposals, which included a reduction of 561 FTE (Full Time Equivalent) jobs. A recorded vote saw 56 in favour of BDR, with 14 against and two abstentions.

New British pro-European group launched

A cross party group of British members of the European Parliament has been launched. Led by Andrew Duff MEP (Lib Dem) Richard Corbett MEP (Labour) and Christopher Beazley MEP (Con), the cross party group aims to counter British indifference to Europe and increase awareness of the benefits of working with our neighbours in the EU. They are determined to combat narrow nationalism and will coordinate closely with like minded members in the Houses of Commons and Lords.

Eurotunnel makes another Loss as Debt Fears Increase

Eurotunnel has been forced to postpone its full-year results, admitting that its auditors had initiated an "alert procedure" over the continuity of its operations in 2007. It made a net loss last year of "slightly above" €300m (£207m) compared with one of €836m in 2004.

Robin Lawrence writes to Park voters.

This week Park Ward campaigners have hand delivered 2,500 letters to voters who have contacted Robin Lawrence. Writing personally to each voter Robin told them that " Over the last eighteen months my team and I have knocked on almost 80% of the ward talking to local residents about their concerns. Many people have also been telling me how they are likely to vote; it is looking very close between the Labour candidate and me.
