Councillor Sharif is delighted to have been selected for Milkstone & Deeplish

Sharif selected as Milkstone and Deeplish candidate

The Council's Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Mohammad Sharif, has been selected to fight for the Liberal Democrats in the local elections in May. The decision was made by the Executive of the Rochdale Constituency. Councillor Sharif won 77% of the vote and will now defend his record in May. A decision was taken to ask the executive to step in after a controversy over the ward result, which Councillor Shariff won but his opponent, Javed Iqbal, claimed foul play.

Ill health 'costs economy £100bn'

A fundamental overhaul of the support given to workers who are off work through illness is needed, a government adviser says. Dame Carol Black, the national director for health and work, said ill-health was costing the economy £100bn a year.

Leaky gut autism theory doubted

Children with autism do not appear to leak damaging proteins from their intestines, a study into the so-called "leaky gut" theory has suggested. It has been claimed autistic children cannot fully digest proteins found in many foods - and that the resulting peptides escape and affect the brain.
