The way in which a national mood spreads across the whole of the UK is fascinating to observe. In 1995 a wave of revulsion against harsh Thatcherite policies and Tory sleaze swept the country. The Conservatives were first thrown out of thousands of Council seats around 1995 and then out of national office in 1997.

Dundee LibDems support controls over mobile phone masts

Dundee Liberal Democrats today (Thursday 19th April) suggested that the Scottish Executive should adopt legislation similar to a new English Bill that aims to bring mobile phone masts under strict planning control and bring in the 'precautionary principle', giving extra safeguards for schools, homes, and medical facilities from the risk of excessive radiation.

Government is in 'Political Paralysis' over Iraq, says Campbell

The government is gripped by "political paralysis" over Iraq, Liberal Democrat Leader Sir Ming Campbell told the Today programme this morning. "I can't remember the last time I heard a senior... minister on your programme defending the policy in Iraq," said Sir Ming, pointing out that senior figures, like Cabinet minister Hilary Benn, had distanced themselves from the phrase "war on terror".

Pregnant woman's torturers jailed

A man and woman who kidnapped, stripped and tortured a pregnant teenager with learning difficulties have been jailed for a total of 17 years. Tammy McGregor, 19, had hot salted water poured over her wounds and cigarettes stubbed out on her at a flat in Aberdeen.
